Historic Engine Room announcement

Submitted by TPA Editor on Tue, 16/08/2016 - 3:15pm

Dear Teneriffe Residents

I just wanted to keep you updated on activity in relation to the disused Engine Room and the Riverwalk at Catalina Park along the river in your area.

As you will be aware, the existing brick Engine Room building is in need of repair.  It would be best used as a café style facility for the benefit of everyone to experience this lovely heritage building.

Council has a long and proud history in re-purposing our old buildings into facilities that can be enjoyed by everybody – three good examples in the area include The End of the Road Café  and the Powerhouse in New Farm Park, and the Gardens Café in the Botanic Gardens in the City.

These are examples of what can be done to make unused and run down structures accessible for everyone in our community.

I want to build our local economy and create opportunities for more employment in Central Ward and if you follow this link - http://www.grahamquirk.com.au/council-revitalises-iconic-teneriffe-engine-room/ you will be able to read the media release from the Lord Mayor that announces the start of construction for the café.

The café will be leased to a social enterprise not-for-profit to operate in the near future.

If you have any queries about this exciting new riverside café for the community just send me an email to central.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au

Your investment as a ratepayer is important to me, and I am determined you get your fair share of maintenance upgrades for the public, Council owned spaces and infrastructure that you use.

Many locals use the river boardwalks in Central Ward so I am pleased to let you know that I have secured a $3.6 Million investment for maintenance work along  the boardwalk at Teneriffe’s Catalina Park.

The boardwalk is obviously constructed in a damaging marine environment and, whilst costly, its ongoing maintenance is vital so the boardwalk remains safe for everyone’s continued use in the future.

When the maintenance works begin, immediately affected residents will be notified.

As always, if you have any local government matter you need assistance with please let me know.

Yours sincerely

Cr Vicki Howard

I was under the impression no one wanted this Cafe? I remember myself and many thoundands of other people signing their name as such on the BCC building application.  How did we reach the point this is going ahead?
